Christian Fiction Teaches Bible Lessons

I am using Christian fiction to teach Bible lessons instead of always using non-fiction in my columns.

It is common for Christian writers to begin with an illustration and then leave it to get to the meat of the Bible teaching. Carrying the illustration through the entire piece is not something I have read before, with any regularity. It has been well-received, so far.

I love writing these pieces. They come easily to me. I start with an idea and the story flows. I am slowly working on a novel, so this helps train me in this new genre.

Jesus used parables and stories, so there is a long history of using narrative to illustrate Biblical truth. Moreover, Christian fiction is huge right now. However, Christian short fiction is not as popular.

Here is a listing of what I have had published, so far.

The Sad Story of the Designated Friend

She was very special to him and he spent whatever time he could with her, taking her to the movies and to dinner. They went to church together and rode horses. He felt warm with the joy she brought him. That is, until the truth rose to the surface like a sea monster.

He was driving her to dinner on a Wednesday and she proclaimed, “I finally found someone I can date!”

Her words struck him like daggers. Since when did she need someone to date? She already had someone! What was she thinking?

Sadly, this lonely young man had returned to the role of which he had become accustomed. The loneliest species of men is the designated friend, and he had taken his familiar place in line. Morose, he forced himself to listen to her trumpet her new boyfriend’s qualities.

Roles of Men and Women Are Confused

In the past, men controlled society and women were considered second-class citizens. Women did not have the opportunities that they have today. They could not vote, and often worked at menial jobs for less pay. Through the efforts of many heroines over time, they fought and won many rights.

In those days, men courted women, but women set the boundaries of their relationships. Women valued their own chastity, and though they lacked social equality, they expected a man’s respect for their femininity. Men knew they had to grow up if they had a chance to get married. Accordingly, women encouraged men to improve and helped strengthen society.

As women gained a better station in life, some took the opportunity to make other changes. In their view, women suffered repression and should fight for sexual liberation. They pushed generations of women into becoming sexually aggressive. As a result, we have confusion today about the roles of men and women.
